Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9 prime cattle, 17 OTM cattle, 3,056 prime hoggs and 5,024 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th January 2016.
Gass’s wagon of cows average 135.1p
The first prime stock sale of the year saw an entry of 33 cows & clean cattle forward.
A very nice entry of 21 cows were on offer to a full ring of buyers with two gentlemen from the Midlands making their presence felt. The sale was topped at 151p by a super Blue x cow from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, who sold Limousin at 136p and 128p. Blonde x from The Lynns sold to 126p. Native breeds sold to 97p from Crosslee. Hill Galloways topped at 94p from Batey Shield Farm with Angus x to 95p from Courstein. Top price per head of £1,041.90 from Nunscleugh, with others to £924.80. Dairy cows sold to a top of 102p from Seat Hill, others to 93p The Stubb with a top per head of £765 being achieved.
A quality entry of prime cattle met a good selling trade with cattle in spec 203p-213p. Top price of 213.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Taylor, Englishtown, with others to 212.5p from J.W. Vevers. Steers all 700+kilos sold to 189.5p with the average 184.8p overall.
A smaller show of 3,056 prime hoggs were forward to a buyer ring of buyers, all desperate for sheep with a shortage of numbers across the country. Demand was fast in all classes and best quality Texel and Beltex hoggs achieved massive premiums and many more of these type could be sold to vendor’s advantage in this centre. Overall average of 174.8p per kilo (SQQ 178.5p).
Top price of 254p per kilo for Beltex from Hollands and Waltonwoodhead, with a top per head of £104 for Beltex from Hollands, closely followed at £100, twice, for Beltex from Waterside and Watch Hillside.

A similar show of 5,046 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers and met a very similar trade. A large show of horned ewes saw the lighter end harder to cash. Rams and best quality Texel ewes dearer on the week.
