Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10 cattle, 2,938 prime hoggs and 2,321 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th April 2016.
A small show of cattle were forward to the usual buyers. Black & White cows to 95p (£679) from T B Imrie, Harelawhole. Hereford cows to 90p (£639) from J Mitchinson & Son, Leahaugh. Prime heifers to 178p from D J Garthwaite, Wyseby Hill Cottage.
A smaller show of 2,938 prime hoggs were forward to a larger ring of buyers, with trade being sharper on the week especially for well fleshed hoggs resulting in us seeing a two tier trade – average 178p (183p SQQ). Export hoggs and best quality hoggs still in demand along with best fleshed heavy weight hoggs. Lightweight hoggs 28-36kg in strong demand so long as well fleshed. Many more sheep could have been sold to advantage today. Top price of 218p for Texels from Shankland, East Raffles and top price per head of £99 for Texels from Walker, Hopesyke.

A smaller show of 2,321 cast ewes and rams were forward to a large ring of buyers, with three more buyers present on the week. All classes were dearer on the week, especially lightweight hill ewes which remained easily sold. Best selling ewes still keenly sought after, with rams a lot dearer on the week. Many more could have been sold to advantage. The sale topped at £150 for Texels rams from Harker, Lanehead.
