Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 23 prime cattle, 16 OTM cattle, 1,118 prime hoggs, 1,144 spring lambs and 3,327 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th June 2016.

Charolais bull tops sale at 142p.

A mixed entry of OTMs were on offer to nine buyers with several new orders at ringside. The sale was topped at 142p by Messrs Barnes, with a Charolais stock bull, which grossed £1178.60. Cows sold to 116p for an Angus from Norman Douglas. Hill Galloways from Jim Robertson sold to 107p, with the best grossing £583.15. Trade of the day was for Debbie Brown who sold “Snowy” the bull at 95p and grossed £850.25.

Prime cattle saw an entry dominated by heifers, which saw eight buyers actively bidding for all types, with the best selling at 200-213.5p, and cattle lacking flesh at 185-200p. Topping the sale were a pair of Limousin heifers, firstly from Beacom Farms Ltd and secondly from Messrs Taylor, who sold another at 212.5p. Steers topped at 199.5p from Dashwell Green. Belted Galloway bullocks off grass sold to 163.3p.

As ever we need more cattle to satisfy growing buyer demand.

Another outstanding show of 1,144 lambs were forward to a full ring of buyers with trade similar on the week, and lambs being far more sought after than predicted. More lambs are required to meet the ever increasing buyer’s demands, with heavy lambs still amounting to good money with lightweight lambs in demand. The sale topped at 228p for Texels from Boldron and £108 for Texels from Millhouse. Sale average 199.5p (SQQ 200.1p).

A smaller show of 1,118 hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with a massive difference on the week with all classes of hoggs in strong demand, with trade being £8-10 better on the week, especially for well fleshed. Many more could be sold to advantage. The sale was topped at 196p for Texels from Low Knockrioch, Kintyre and £111 for Texels from Linton Farm. Sale average 168.4p (SQQ 169.6p).

A larger show of 3,327 cast ewes and rams were forward to an increased ring of buyers, with trade being far better than predicted especially for Cheviot and Blackface ewes and good lean selling sorts. Fat remains a bad word at this time of year, proving harder to cash. Rams maintain recent rates. Sale topped at £154 for Texel rams from Graceside and Texel ewes topping at £136 from The Land.
