Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 20 prime cattle & prime bulls, 915 prime hoggs, 1,971 spring lambs and 3,201 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd June 2016.
A small show of prime cattle whereby trade maintained late rates, and more could have easily been sold. Top price of 210.5p was achieved for a Limousin heifer sold by Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling, bought by M J Wharton Butchers, Wigton. Steers sold to 208.5p three times, all sold by A & W J Taylor, Dashwell Green, being bought by M J Wharton & Mr S McGimpsey respectively.
The bulls were also short of requirements, never the less they topped at 208.5p from G J A Rome & Co., Niven Hill and bought by J A Jewitt Meats, Wholesalers.

The largest show of the season so far of 1,971 spring lambs were forward to the usual full ring of buyers, all keen for sheep resulting in one of the week’s best averages. All classes in demand with a lack of 45kg+ lambs forward. Sale topped at £108 twice for Texels from Colinton Mains and Four o Boot and to 232p twice for Texels from Carran and Beltex from Tercrosset. Sale averaged an impressive 202.7p with SQQ 202.9p.

A much larger show of 3,201 cast ewes and rams were forward to a full of buyers. All classes £5-7 sharper on the week, even for fat ewes. Hill ewes remain easily sold and short of requirements. Best quality ewes met extreme rates. Sale topped at £146, £144 for Texel ewes from Charlesfield.
