Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 cattle, 3,517 prime lambs and 7,234 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th October 2016.
The weekly sale of primestock had forward 34 cattle comprising of 24 cows, 5 stock bulls and 5 prime bulls.
OTM’s: Richard tops sale with Limousin
An extremely mixed entry of quality was offered to a reduced company of buyers, with farmer’s friend Shaun late on parade. Trade though sharp was slightly easier on the week, with small working cows less. Richard topped the sale with his red Limousin at 128p, followed at 111p for an Angus x from the same home. The Vickers ladies sold an aged Blonde x to 108p, Charolais x cows from David Baxter sold at 109p. Top price per head was £934.40 from Slealands, with dairy cows to £705.25 from Roanstree. Cast bulls; increased numbers saw four buyers operating, topping at 110p for a Galloway bull from G Bell & Co., Bloch, who also sold a Whitebred Shorthorn to 108p.
Prime bulls: A small entry sold to 200p for a 20 month Simmental x from the Vickers ladies, who also sold a 21 month Blonde x to 154p. Galloway bull at 29 month from Paul Whitfield sold to 154p, who also sold a 27 month Beltie to 152p.
A similar show of 3,517 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers showing more eagerness to buy, with a better show for quality and flesh forward, it resulted in a better trade throughout, with an overall sale average of 171p, with an SQQ of 174p. Lambs sold to a top of 242p for Beltex from Crawthat, and to £102 for Texels from the same home.

A massive show 7,234 cast ewes and rams were forward to the same ring of buyers, trade for all classes was £2-3 easier on the week, with a larger show of hill ewes forward. Best selling Texel and Continental ewes and rams met the usual fast trade and were short of requirements. Sale topped at £165 for a Suffolk ram from Lands and Texel ewes topped at £158 from Beckfoot.
