Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 22 cattle, 5,718 prime lambs and 4,496 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th October 2016.
The weekly sale of primestock where an entry of over 22 head of OTM’s were forward.
Paul tops at 115p with Devons.
An indifferent entry of OTM’s were on offer to the usual good company of buyers, who bid freely for all types. Paul Magnay topped the sale twice at 115p with South Devon x and Charolais x. Blue Grey cows from Jim Wood sold to 97p. Dairy cows were a mixed entry and sold to a top of 107p for a tank of a cow from Malcolm Dodd, others sold to 98p from John B. Top price per head was £856.75 from Smallholms, with others to £851.00 from Chapelknowe. Farmers, we need 50+ cows to supply buyers demand.
A much larger show of 5,718 lambs were forward to an increased ring of buyers, all keen for sheep with trade being some 10ppk sharper on the week, in most classes. Best quality lambs were forward in large numbers, and met a fantastic selling trade. Export lambs and heavyweight lambs sold at recent rates, but had to be well fleshed. A much larger show of light lambs was forward and in turn resulted in more demand. The smallest end realised store prices. Top price per kilo was 268p for Beltex lambs from Woodhead, and top price per head £105 also for Beltex from Bridgestone. Overall sale average of 166.2p (SQQ 167.4p).

A similar show 4,496 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, heavyweight ewes £3-5 dearer on the week, with best selling ewes short of buyer requirements. Blackface and Cheviot ewes sold at recent rates, although the plainest ewes slightly easier. Rams continue at high rates and short of numbers.
Sale topped at £170 for Texel rams from Graceside and ewes topped at £146 for Texels from Lower Reiss.
