Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 39 cattle, 6,096 prime lambs and 5,047 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 15th December 2016.

The company held its weekly sale where an entry of 39 cattle, comprising of 24 cows and 15 prime cattle were forward. OTM’s: A marvelous show for quality was on offer to an increased company of buyers, with several new faces present. Trade was sharp throughout from the first animal in the ring, a fourteen year old Continental cross from Mrs Porritt which realised 116p, to the nine year old Friesian from Fraser Beard, which made 97p.

Topping the sale at 124p was two cows, firstly an Angus x from Neil & Elliott Cavers and secondly a Limousin x from Harry & Geoff Gass, who’s trailer load of cows averaged 122.4p. Luing cows sold to 109p from Robert Warden, with Herefords selling to 104p from Michael Baxter. Bewcastle Charolais sold to 98p from Gordon Jackson. Over 20% of the cows sold in excess of £900 to a top of £954.80. Black and Whites met good competition, topping at 97p with the majority 92-96p and selling to £731.40 from The Stubb.

Prime Cattle: Seven buyers at ringside all looking for cattle, heifers were on fire with continentals regularly 205-220p. steers were a mixed show and sold between 180-208p, but everything saw men bidding to what they were worth. John and Lindsay topped the sale at 220p with a sweet Limousin heifer, and others sold to 218p. Englishtown sold Limousin’s to 214p, with David Wilson Blonde’s to 208p. Steers sold to 208p from John and James Taylor. Heavy heifers sold to £1,254 from Waterbeck. Pride of place in the clean must go to Fraser Beard with an eighteen month Friesian heifer which realised 166p and grossed £929.60.

Remember prime cattle and OTM’s commission is £30 maximum. Sell live and thrive.

Christmas is coming and I have seen one of the two miracles, Fraser Beard a happy farmer, now I have to find the dead donkey!

Another outstanding show of 6,096 prime lambs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. Averages were similar on the week although the SQQ lambs were cheaper whilst the heavyweight lambs gained ground. A very large show of 28-38kg lambs were forward and were therefore slightly easier on the week.

The sale topped at 253p for Beltex lambs from Messrs MacIntyre, Downan, Ballantrae and to a top of £104 and £101 for Texels from P Musgrave, Sowerby Wood.
