Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 34 cattle, 3,461 prime hoggs and 2,742 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th May 2017.

The company held their weekly sale of prime stock where an entry of 34 prime cattle, bulls and OTM were forward. Increased number of buyers at the ringside competed for all types and trade in all classes well above seller’s expectations.

Prime bulls, a nice entry of average Continentals met a very good trade topping at 218p for a Limousin from Messrs Taylor, Dashwellgreen. The overall average for all forward was 210.4p.

Clean cattle:

Heifers sell to 232p! Steers to £1,532.50

Demand outstripped supply as the 8 buyers at ringside wanted all types, weights and breeds. Well fleshed butchers type cattle regularly sold between 212p-228p, topping at 232p for a heavy weight Limousin heifer from the Taylor men, Dashwellgreen, other Limousin heifers sold to 223p from Low Plains. Blondes sold to 220p from Messrs Fiddler, with heavy weigh heifers £1,444.50 from Sceugh Dyke.

Steers sold to a top of £1,532.50 from James Taylor with a top price of 212p for a Charolais.

Today we had our first sale of spring lambs with 91 head forward in a variety of weights. Handy weight lambs proved the best to sell with heavy lambs sticky. This is the transition period with firms changing over from hoggets to lambs in the next few weeks. The sale topped at £100 for Suffolks from Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan and 222p/kg for Suffolks from Hazel Martindale, The Lands.

A larger show of 3,461 prime hoggs were forward to the usual busy ring of buyers, all very keen for sheep with best fleshed hoggs realising a massive premium. A two-tier trade has now developed, with well fleshed hoggs maintaining recent high rates in all weight ranges, however leaner sorts proving harder to cash and reflecting in averages. Best quality export hoggs up to 44kg short of requirements, with a larger show of heavy hoggs forward, both classes seeing a rise of 13p per kg on the week. Lightweight hoggs remained similar. More hoggs could be sold to advantage each week.

Sale topped at 278p for yet another outstanding pen of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth, who also had the top price per head of £110. Sale averaged 169p (SQQ 179p).

A similar show of 2,742 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of customers, with trade for all classes sharper on the week especially for Blackface ewes. Heavy ewes remain plentiful although smaller hill type ewes short of buyer requirements. Rams sharper.

Sale topped at £158 for Texel ewes from A & C Watson, Sanderson House, with rams to £146 for Suffolks from C. Nixon, Long Stumble.
