Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 28 cattle, 4,479 prime lambs and 5,642 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th November 2017.
22 OTM cattle and 6 clean cattle were forward. Cast cows comprised of plainer hill cows but sold well beyond vendors expectations. Top price of 135p for an Angus sold by P.T. Dayson, Whamtown, with top price being £958.50 also sold by Mr Dayson.

A larger entry of 4,479 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with a far better show for quality and flesh forward, all classes were again dearer on the week, especially for fleshed lambs. The best quality lambs easily sold at recent high rates and continue to be short of buyer requirements. Light lambs were very dear in 34-37kg category especially Texel kinds, smaller lighter horned lambs hard to cash.
Sale topped at 261p for a pen of outstanding Beltex lambs from R. & S. Nixon, Oakwood.
Top price per head of £106 for a pen of strong Texel lambs from A.R. Bell, Kirkton.
Overall sale average 177.9p (SQQ 180.4p).

Another large show of 5,642 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with heavy ewes similar on the week, although yet again plainer, leaner hill type ewes hard to cash. Best quality ewes dearer and short of requirement, whilst rams remain keenly sought after.
Sale topped at £151 for tremendous Texel ewes from A. Mounsey, Ward Hall Guards. Rams to £136 for Texel’s from J.L. Gledson, Buteland.
