Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 4,297 prime hoggs and 3,605 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 22^nd March 2018.

Cast cows sold well and more needed. Top price of 151p for a Limousin cow sold by Waterhead of Dryfe Ltd. Black & White cows sold to 122p from TB Imrie, Harelawhole. Top price per head was £1,057 for another Limousin from Shaw of Dryfe Farm.

Clean cattle again sold very well and more needed to fulfill buyers demand. The sale topped at 245p for a Charolais heifer from J&J&D Taylor, Englishtown, whose load of cattle averaged 230.2p. Limousin bullocks peaked at 226p sold by A & WJ Taylor, Dashwell Green. Top price per head was £1,638 and £1,627.20 also from Dashwell Green with heifers peaking at £1,433.25 and £1,428 from Englishtown.

4,297 prime hoggs were again dear and short of requirements, with best Beltex and Texel hoggs selling over 300p per kilo and to a top of 346p for Beltex hoggs from Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth and top price per head of £140 for Suffolk hoggs from Upper Mains, Annan, with all heavy hoggs selling between £120-£145 per head.

Export hoggs again sold well making between 240-260p per kilo with light hoggs selling between 220-230p per kilo bracket for all good meat. Top price per head for those was £99 from Heathery Hall, Biggar. Overall sale average 238.6p (SQQ 241.4p).

3,605 cast ewes and rams were another good show and met the dearest trade so far this season, with buyers operating very strong. 2,243 heavy ewes averaged £101.02. Pure Texels again met a premium selling to a top of £178 from Catslackburn, Yarrow. Hill ewes to £96 for Blackface from Kirkland, Kirkconnell and rams to £167 for Suffolks from The Knock, Duns.
