Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10 cattle, 1,666 prime lambs and 2,599 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd August 2018.

A small show of cattle was forward but met a brisk trade throughout with more required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at 191p and 183p for heifers from John Higgs Farms, Arkleton with cows to 140p and 130p for Charolais from Messrs Baxter, Moss Side, Hethersgill. Top price per head of £1,085 from Moss Side.

As everywhere this week with the festival taking place, a smaller show of 1,666 prime lambs were on offer. Trade was much dearer with averages up 4p on the week to average 187p overall. Many more could easily be sold to vendors advantage. Top price per kilo of 220p for Texel lambs from DJ Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, Lockerbie and to a top price per head of £105 for Texels from Messrs Jenkinson, High Priorscales, Seascale, closely followed at £104 for Texels from Messrs Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland and both purchased by MJ Wharton.

2,599 cast ewes and rams were only a third of last weeks entry. Trade here again was dearer than anticipated with numbers short of requirements. Heavy ewes sold to £149 for Texels from Chaseside, with hill ewes to £84 for Cheviot ewes from WN Douglas, Catslackburn, Selkirk. Rams to £126 for Texels from Beckfoot.
