Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 12 cattle, 2,434 prime lambs and 3,586 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th September 2018.

Fewer cattle were forward due to standstill regulations, although trade remained buoyant throughout and more required on a weekly basis. Luing heifers to 185p and 180p from A Craig & Co., Compstonend, Twynholm. Limousin cows to 116p from H Graham, Holme House, Brampton.

2,434 prime lambs were forward but a poorer quality show, although lambs met a firmer trade than expected to average a healthy 175.7p (SQQ 177p) for all classes at Longtown. Sale topped at £200 for a Texel ram lamb from MA & J Thompson, High Hall, Wigton, which also achieved top price per kilo of 333p.

A smaller entry of 3,586 cast ewes and rams saw strong meaty ewes a shade dearer with leaner sorts harder to cash. Heavy ewes to £155 and £152 from M Watson, Four o Boot, Carlisle with hill ewes to £62 for Cheviots from R H Paton, Gateslack, Thornhill. Rams to £136 for Texel from N Harvey, Blackadder Mains, Duns.
