Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 21 cast cows, 4,256 prime hoggs and 3,868 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21^st February 2019.

A much improved entry of cast cows was presented to extra buyers, which ensured a sharper trade for all classes this week and more required on a weekly basis. Top price of £1,000 for an Angus cow shown by TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill then to £973 for a Limousin from A & A Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan. Top price per kilo of 144p for Luings from The Lamperts, Gilsland.

The 4,256 prime hoggs were a smaller but quality show. Usual buyers operating with trade only slightly less on the week to average 188.1p overall (SQQ 198.2p).

Many quality Beltex and Texel hoggs sold between 260-290p and to 308p for Beltex hoggs shown by DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth. Commercial hoggs all sold between 190-210p per kilo.

Top price per head of £117 again for Beltex hoggs from Park House Farming Co, Wigton and from Messrs Taylor, Perth. Suffolk hoggs to £100 from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Castle Douglas and Greyface hoggs selling to £90 from Messrs Wilson, Plumpe, Gretna and J Cavers, Ashley Park, Hawick. Cheviot hoggs to £93.50 from Firm of NB Conaghan, West Scales, Gretna and an excellent show of Blackface hoggs sold to £84.50 from W Graham & Son, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar.

Light hoggs were shorter in numbers on the week, with trade again strong, regularly making 200p per kilo and to £71 (236p) for 30kg Cheviot hoggs from JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Lockerbie.

A smaller entry of 3,868 cast ewes and rams attracted a full ring of interested buyers who were all keen to buy. Trade was slightly dearer on the week with the best Beltex and Texel ewes selling at a premium and to a top of £171 for Texel ewes from R. Lawson, Aton with hill ewes to £67 for Cheviots from LM Laing, Tarrasfoot and Hendrie Bros Ltd, Millards. Rams to £110 for Charollais from Chaseside.

No fewer than 402 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £123.23, which was a rise of £2.50 on the week.
