Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,595 sheep comprising of 1,846 prime lambs and 5,749 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 25th July 2019.

An increased entry of cows saw all classes in demand with more required on a weekly basis. Sale topped at £945 for a Beef Shorthorn cow from Mr Welsh, West Broadmoss, Ayrshire with Limousin cows to £883 from JM Retson, Maidencots, Abington and to £849 from J Wyllie, Meinbank, Waterbeck. British Blues sold to £878 from WD & B Thompson, East Unthank, Haltwhistle. Top price per kilo of 124p for a Limousin from Meinbank, Beef Shorthorn to 122p from West Broadmoss, British Blues to 122p from East Unthank and Angus cows sold to 118p from Messrs McKerrow, Darlawhills, Lockerbie.

A smaller entry of 1,846 prime lambs met a much better trade than anticipated to average 179.7p (SQQ 180.9), which would be very similar to last week. Top price per kilo of 225p for Bleu du Maine lambs shown by DW Scott, Stanley House, Kirklinton with top price per head of £95 for a pen of excellent heavy Texel lambs from Messrs Clubbs, Old Wall, Irthington and bought by Maurice Wharton, Wholesale Butchers, Wigton.

The majority of export lambs sold around the 200p per kilo mark with commercial lambs selling between 175p-180p per kilo.

The 5,749 cast ewes and rams were another big entry, all the usual buyers to the fore. Trade was buoyant throughout the sale with strong and hill types slightly easier and leaner hill ewes selling less on the week. Overall average of £66.01 with 302 ewes selling at £100 and over to average £125.84. Again, the best Beltex and Texel ewes a very strong trade with heavy mule ewes also a good trade selling over £80.

Sale topped at £158 for Texel ewes shown by RJL Park, Drinkstone, Hawick with hill ewes to £72 for Cheviots from AB & C Main, Byers Farm, Bewcastle. Texel rams sold to £152 from N Harvey, Blackadder Mains, Duns.
