Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,029 sheep comprising of 2,731 prime lambs and 3,298 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th August 2019.

2,731 prime lambs were down in numbers on the week, with quality hardly as good, although buyers were keen to purchase with trade up by 4p per kilo to average 177.3p (SQQ 178.0p). Many more could have easily been sold to vendors advantage.

Heavy lambs were the highlight of the sale with many pens making £90 plus and to a top of £104 for Texels shown by RD Fleming, Hillhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Export lambs easily sold between 200-220p per kilo and to 227p for Beltex lambs from JA & LA Thompson, Woodhead, Scaleby. Commercial lambs sold between 170p to early 180p plus, with lightweights still in strong demand.

With a full ring of buyers, the 3,298 cast ewes and rams proved inadequate for the demand, where many more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Overall average of £65.43 with 214 ewes selling at £100 and over to average £121.77. Again, the best Beltex and Texel ewes sold at a premium as was heavy Greyface ewes, with the sale topping at £168 for Texel ewes from T Renwick & Sons, Craig Douglas, Yarrow. Hill ewes of good quality meat met a strong trade between £60-£70 and to a top of £73 for Kendal Rough ewes shown by I Kyle, Church View, Roweltown. Beltex rams to £132 from Chaseside.
