Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,935 sheep comprising of 3,863 prime lambs and 5,072 cast ewes & rams and 12 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 8th October 2020.

A poorer show of weathered cows were forward, with trade being reflected by this. The sale topped at 119p for Limousin cows from E & D Barker, Palmer Hill, Brampton with Luing cows selling to 116p from W Wilson & Co., Geltsdale, Castle Carrock.

A similar show of 3,863 prime lambs saw a two tier trade as fed lambs sold to an improved trade,  whilst grass fed lambs would prove harder to cash. A lot of lean lambs forward that would have been easier sold on a Tuesday and vendors are urged to draw their lambs harder to receive a premium. Export lambs were in big demand whilst heavies and smalls maintained recent rates of return.

Topping the sale at 286p was a tremendous pen of 10 Beltex lambs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck.

Top price per head of £128 was also achieved for Beltex from Messrs Halliday, who’s fantastic run of 56 Beltex lambs averaged 45kg, 260p and £117.43.

Overall average of 199.4p (SQQ 202.8p)
