Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,575 sheep comprising of 4,087 prime lambs and 3,488 cast ewes & rams plus 13 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th November 2020.

Another similar entry of cast cows were forward; all being hill bred, with trade continuing at recent rates. The sale topped at £985 for an Angus shown by TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill, Longtown with Beef Shorthorns to £957 from M Johnson & Son, Halfway House, Hexham, who also sold the top price per kilo of 186p and 171p. Angus cows sold to 128p from Cubbyhill, 124p Potholm and 122p from Burrance of Courance. More numbers still required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.

A similar show of 4,087 top quality prime lambs was forward which attracted the usual ring of buyers who again were keen for supplies ensuring the dearest trade of the season. 32kg-38kg in massive demand

The best lambs sold between 280-310p and to a top of 335p for a Beltex lamb from M & M Byrne, Thornthwaite Close, Wigton. Again, more required for the extreme demand.

Heavy lambs (45-52kg) Texel lambs topped the price per head at £137 from RWR Harris, Auchengool Cottage, Dundrennan and averaged a marvellous 208.9p. Suffolks to £121 from Messrss Stewart, Challoch Mun with Greyface lambs to £100 from MA & J Thompson, High Hall, Wigton and Blackface to £99.50 from Messrs J Peterkin, Beauly.

Standard Lambs (32-39kg) sold to blistering rates being dearer again on the week and can easily be sold, being short of buyer’s requirements and to average a whopping 223.1p. Many more wanted for the next three weeks of trading as demand continues to thrive at Longtown.

A larger entry of 3,488 cast ewes and rams were forward to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring a fast trade from start to finish with all classes being in strong demand. All classes of ewes can be sold to vendor advantage and are required to fulfill purchaser demand on a weekly basis here at Longtown.

Texel ewes sold to a top of £168 from AC Clark, Fineview, Glenluce.

Mules again slightly firmer with a lot of heavy mules £85+ topping at £94 for a pen consigned from The Snab, Waterbeck   

Hill ewes sold to a top of £83 for a fantastic penful of forty Blackface ewes shown by E Thorburn & Son, Pitland Hills, Hexham.

Rams easily maintained last weeks high rates of return. Topping the sale was a hefty Texel ram realising £135 consigned by RJ & CE Smith, Burnside, Selkirk.
