Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,377 sheep comprising of 5,161 prime hoggs and 3,216 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th January 2021.

Cast cows met a very brisk trade for all classes, with more numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demand here at Longtown. Angus cows sold at 116p from J Gemmill & Son, Ifferdale, Campbeltown with Holsteins to 114p from Hewson Bros., Jerriestown, Blackford.

Another bumper show of 5,161 hoggs forward to an increased ring of purchasers, ensuring a fast trade throughout. Commercial hoggs slightly easier but best Beltex and Texel hoggs were unbelievable and dearer on last week’s blistering rates of return

Topping the sale at 379p for a fantastic Beltex hogg from DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth.

Best Beltex hoggs trading between 340-370ppk and more could have been handled with ease.

Top price per head of £167 also achieved for Beltex hoggs from Easter Ochtermuthill, who run of 28 hoggs went on to average 41kg, 346p, £142.64.  

Heavy hoggs continued to sell well, with a lot of hoggs realising £135-£145 per head.

Lightweight hoggs continued to be in massive demand and short of purchaser’s requirements. The prices simply speak for themselves.

All classes of hoggs continue to sell to unbelievable rates here at Longtown and are actively sought after for next week’s sale.

Overall average of 262.7p (SQQ 274.9p), which equates to an average per head of £113.42.

The 3,216 ewes were a marvelous trade with all classes in big demand and easily maintaining last week’s high rates of return

Pure Bred Texel ewes topped the sale at £200 shown by TD & JR Byers, Cubbyhill, Longtown and from K & M Jamieson, Woodhead, Annan.

Rams sold well albeit slightly easier than last week’s serious prices.

Hill ewes to £93 for Cheviots from R & A Wilson, Clackmae, Earlston, with Blackface ewes topping at £86 M & C Ralston, Rhoin, Campbeltown.  

Rams sold to £166 for Texels from KA Dawe, Paradise Park, Holsworthy.
