Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,766 sheep comprising of 3,808 prime hoggs and 3,131 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 25th March 2021.

A small show of cast cows forward, again all classes in demand and more numbers required. The sale topped at £1,123 for a Beef Shorthorn from Meikle Whitriggs, Lockerbie, who also sold others at £1,068.

A very mixed show and a smaller show of 3,635 prime hoggs forward. Beltex hoggs lead the way as well finished hoggs prove good to cash.

Top price per kilo at 428p was achieved for a pen of eight unbelievable Beltex hoggs consigned by J Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Crieff, whom also topped per head at £186 for another outstanding penful of sixteen Beltex hoggs this run of Beltex Hoggs went on to average 44kg, 412p and an eye watering £183.04p.

Heavy Hoggs were a poorer show and easier on the week topping at £180 for a hefty Beltex Hogg Consigned by regular vendor M/s Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perthshire.

Small well finished hoggs sold to recent fast rates of return topping at 405p for a pen of 4 super Beltex hoggs again consigned by M/s Taylor, Easterochtermuthill, other continentals topped at 310p consigned by Raecleugh Head farms. Cheviot hoggs topped at 320p consigned by M/s Hindmarsh, Rowhope, Harbottle, whilst Blackface hoggs consigned by M/s DF Duncan, Killapol, Argyll realising 299p.

All classes of well finished hoggs are still in serious demand whilst leaner sorts are still better marketed in the store at Longtown on a Tuesday.

A similar show of 3,131 ewes were forward. Common heavy ewes were slightly less on the week, whilst better selling ewes and best Texel ewes would be dearer on the week.

Export type ewes would be firmer again on the week and short of purchaser requirements.

Heavy ewes topped at £207 for Texel ewes consigned by RL & AR Phillips, Fir Trees, Harrogate.

Mule ewes topped at £120 from Nether Stenries.  

Hill ewes sold to a top of £113 for Blackface ewes shown by Kirkland Farming, Kirkland, Kirkconnel, with Cheviot ewes to £112 from M Ryder, Newton Cottage, Moffat.

Rams selling to £170 for Texels from Beckfoot.
