Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,593 sheep comprising of 2,421 spring lambs and 2,172 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 22th July 2021.

 A small show of cast cows were forward although continue to sell at recent high rates, with more numbers required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £1,036 for a Belted Galloway from Hoscote Estate, Hawick, who sold others at 184p.

A similar show of 2,421 new season spring lambs were forward receiving an absolutely blistering trade from start to finish, outstripping all deadweight outlets and live weigh and pay collections by a country mile. All classes of prime lambs are in massive demand here at Longtown, with more required on a weekly basis to satisfy a hugely competitive customer demand. Achieving an overall sale average of 273.0p (SQQ 274.8p).

The best quality export lambs topped the sale at 325p and 323p for Beltex lambs shown by

Miss K White, Morwood, Bardon Mill, closely followed at 323p for a penful of tremendous Dutch Texel lambs consigned from WR Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne, Hexham.

Commercial export lambs sold to a big trade with many pens surpassing 275ppk.

Heavy lambs again in huge demand as a national shortage see’s weighty lambs very good to cash. With several pens realising £140 plus, selling to a top per head of £158 for Texel lambs shown by Lawson Agri, Middle Foot, Hethersgill.

Handy weight lambs 32-37kg sold to an absolute ripper of a trade with many pens realising 285ppk plus with more required to fill an unprecedented demand. Beltex lambs topped this section the sale at 323p consigned by Miss K White, Morwood. Texels topped at 305p consigned by R&WD&SR Charleton, Whiteside Farm, Haltwhistle. Mules topped at 271p consigned by Messrs I Clark, Paddockhole, Lockerbie. Blackface lambs sold very well for the second week in succession with a pen of 25 consigned by Messrs Murray, Sewingshields, Hexham realising 257p.

A smaller show of 2,172 ewes were forward. A plainer show of ewes forward to the same competitive ring of purchasers sold to easily maintain recent high rates of return. Best quality Texel ewes were in short supply and required for next weeks sale by purchaser demand. Keep the ewes moving while the going is good.  

Heavy ewes topped at £188 for a Texel shown by C Jackson, Langdyke Cottage, Ecclefechan.   

Hill ewes topped at £114 for Cheviots from JT Fleming & Son, Falnash, Hawick with Blackface ewes selling to £109 for a penful from J Wight & Sons, Midlock, Biggar.   

Mule ewes topped at £125 for a penful consigned by Third Farms, Third Farm, Lockerbie.

Rams to £220 for North Country Cheviots from Beckfoot.
