Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,534 sheep comprising of 3,122 spring lambs and 4,412 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th August 2021.

Another good entry of cast cows were forward with more quality on offer, yet again more numbers are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at 170p (x2) for Shorthorns from Waterhead of Dryfe, Lockerbie, who also sold Limousin cows at 160p. Simmental cows sold to 155p shown by BE Davidson, Bellfield, Longtown.

Top price per head of £1,271 for Simmentals from Bellfield, with Limousins selling to £976 from Waterhad of Dryfe and £936 from JW Davidson & Co., Crosslee, Selkirk.

A similar show of 3,122 new season spring lambs were forward; from the best of Beltex lambs to Swaledale light lambs, which sold to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring a buoyant trade for all classes from start to finish.  

The best export lambs were in big demand topping at 300ppk for Beltex lambs shown by G Mitchinson & Son, High Greenhill, Kirkcambeck, which also topped the sale.

Commercial lambs again continued to sell well trading at 225p-230p

Heavy lambs continued to sell well, topping at £139 for Texel lambs from J Anderson & Son, Priesthaugh, Hawick.    

Well fleshed lambs can still be sold to vendor advantage whilst leaner types proving harder to cash. Fed sheep and well finished sheep are keenly sought after for next weeks sale and can be sold to vendor advantage here at Longtown.

An overall sale average of 227.7p (SQQ 228.5p).

Another large show of 4,412 ewes were forward to again, another increased ring of purchasers. All classes of ewes, apart from mules which would be slightly easier on the week, sold to blistering rates and many more can be sold to vendor advantage.

A fantastic show of heavy ewes forward sold to the dearest trade of the season with several pens surpassing £200, topping at £220 for a pen of Texels shown by Lower Reiss Farms, Caithness.

Suffolk ewes were forward in force topping at £162 for a pen of unliftable ewes consigned by J & MH Brims, Thruster Mains, Wick. Several pens surpassed £140 and proved very good to sell.

An outstanding show of North Country Cheviot ewes sold to a serious trade with many pens surpassing £120, topping at £142 for a pen of hefty ewes consigned by Messrs Beard, Dormansteads.

A plainer show of mule ewes would prove slightly easier on the week topping at £124 from Howgillside Farmers, Eaglesfield.

Hill ewes topped at £113 for Cheviots from Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk with Blackface ewes selling at £110 from A Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill, Bewcastle

Rams to blistering rates topping at £180 for Texels from Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk.
