Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,279 sheep comprising of 4,108 prime lambs and 4,171 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th September 2021.

A much improved show of cast cows sold to an increased ring of purchasers insuring all classes were in serious demand with more numbers required on a weekly basis at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,105 for a Holstein from Hewson Bros., Jerriestown, Blackford with Angus cows at 147p from M Baxter, Kilnhill, Brampton.

A larger show of 4,108 new season prime lambs were forward meeting an absolute ripper of a trade with all classes in massive demand from start to finish, achieving an outstanding overall sale average of 246.3ppk.

Top price per kilo of 313p achieved for Beltex lambs shown by JW & ES Woodmass, Howard House, Gilsland.

All classes of lambs that had been fed and full of meat were simply on fire with many pens realising 270p +. Many more fed lambs can be sold to vendor advantage.  

Heavy lambs also proved very good to cash with several pens over £140 and countless pens realising over £135. All classes wanted for next weeks sale.  

Top price per head of £152 for Texels from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.

Also included in today’s sale was another tremendous run of 294 Easycare lambs consigned by M/s JM Wight & Son, East Fortissat, Lanarkshire, topping at £114.50p and 256ppk.
