Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,403 sheep comprising of 4,435 prime lambs and 4,968 cast ewes & rams and 29 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th October 2021.

A larger show of 29 cast cows were forward although very much a mixed entry. Best cows remain in demand with leaner types proving slightly easier as per the national trend. The sale topped at £1,071 and £1,040 for Angus cows shown by JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck, Canonbie. Beef Shorthorns topped the price per kilo at 168p from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, Hawick with others to 164p from E Wilkie, Shaw Cottage South, Lockerbie.

Another large show of 4,435 prime lambs were forward.

Heavy lambs were in big demand and sold to a fast trade from start to finish. A fantastic run of first cross Suffolk and Texel lambs consigned by M/s Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham topped at £156 and achieving an average of £130.78 for 64 sold. Several pens of heavies breaching £130, many more can be sold to vendor advantage. Heavy lambs topped at £157 for Beltex shown by CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.

Commercial export lambs were slightly easier on the week with fed lambs still receiving a premium and still very much in demand regularly achieving 230 – 240ppk

A very mixed show of light lambs were on offer selling to another fast trade.

Best quality export lambs proved very good to sell Topping price per kilo of 307p achieved for Beltex lambs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Lockerbie.

A large show of 4,968 ewes were forward to another increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to a brisk trade easily maintaining last weeks high rates of return. A very mixed show of sheep with best continental ewes in short supply, more continental ewes are wanted to satisfy customer demand.   

Heavy ewes topped at £204 for Texel ewes from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.  

Light ewes sold to £106 for Blackfaces from R & WD & SR Charlton, Whiteside, Haltwhistle.

Rams to £165 for North Country Cheviots from R King & Sons, Gospel Hall, Jedburgh.
