Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,742 sheep comprising of 3,403 prime lambs and 3,339 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st October 2021.

A smaller show of cast cows were forward with quality remaining in demand and more numbers still required on a weekly basis to meet demand. The sale topped at £1,215 for a great Limousin from A Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill, Bewcastle, who sold others at 162p per kilo.

More cows wanted for next weeks sale as requested by new and returning purchaser enquiry for continental feeding and finished cows. Please don’t hesitate to contact our auctioneers for further enquiries.

A reduced entry of 3,403 prime lambs sold to a fast trade being 10p up on the week, well finished sheep proved a massive trade and very good to sell.

Heavy lambs sold to a huge trade with countless pens of sheep being £135+ topping the sale at an eye watering £163 consigned by for Texels from J Peterkin, Barnyards, Inverness.  

Best export sheep regularly ventured over 300ppk and proved in big demand. Top price per kilo of 320p achieved for Beltex lambs shown by Douglas & Charlie Elliot, High Greenhill, Kirkcambeck.

A smaller show of 3,339 ewes sold to a full ring of purchasers. Ewes on a whole were dearer across the board, with best Texel and Beltex ewes selling to a blistering trade topping at £212 being consigned GJ Toppin, Bascodyke Foot, Ainstable, who’s run of 23 ewes went on to average £196. Countless pens breaching £180.

Light ewes sold to £99 for Cheviots from WJ Henderson, Whitehill, Corrie. Blackface ewes sold to a big trade topping at £91 from Hill Brae.

Mules proved better to sell with the heaviest ewes selling in excess of £100.

Cast rams sold to a massive trade, definitely being sold to vendor advantage. Topping at £172 for Bluefaced Leicester’s from K Lumley, Newbiggin, Blanchland.
