Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,672 sheep comprising of 5,676 prime lambs and 4,996 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 9th December 2021.

A smaller show of cast cows were forward, with less quality on offer. The sale topped at £1,214 for a Charolais shown by Messrs Baxter, Moss Side, Hethersgill, which also topped the price per kilo at 142p. More numbers of all classes required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand.

A larger entry of 5,676 prime lambs were forward to the usual competitive ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold well.

Lightweight lambs (31-37kg) sold to a huge enquiry with all classes being sharper on the week.

Beltex lambs topped this section and the sale, selling to 397ppk consigned from High house.

Texels and all continental bred lambs in this section remain very good to sell and way short of purchaser requirements topping at 318ppk consigned from High House.

Blackface lambs sold to the dearest trade of the season topping at 294ppk for a very well finished pen of 50 consigned by M/s Graham, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar, who’s fantastic run of 211 Blackface lambs went on to average £105 per head and 293ppk.

All Classes of fed lightweight lambs are required to fulfil purchaser demand on a weekly basis.

Again, heavies proved the flavor of the day with countless pens of oversized lambs making £160+ and selling beyond 300ppk.

Topping the sale per head of £176 for Texel lambs shown by J Peterkin, Barnyards, Inverness.

Mules sold well again with 52kg plus lambs proving very good to sell. Topping at £169 consigned from West Newlands with a further 2 pens selling over £160.

A highlight of the sale was a fantastic run of Texel cross lambs consigned by M/s W Barbour, Carsegowan, Dumfries who’s run of 282 heavy lambs topped at £169 for a penful of 16 well bred 55kg lambs. This run of lambs went on to average a marvelous £149 per head or 282ppk.

Rams topped at £198 for Texels from Maxwell Farming Co., Druidhall, Thornhill.
