Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,109 sheep comprising of 3,761 prime lambs and 2,348 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd December 2021.

A larger offering of mainly hill cows were forward to a busy and keen ringside of buyers, ensuring all classes continue to sell at recent high rates. More numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £1,010 for Black & Whites from CT & J Wigham & Sons, Hethermill, Kirklinton with Angus selling to £974 from RJ Anderson & Son, Penchrise, Hawick. Blue Greys topped at £841 and £833 from J Higgs Farms, Arkleton, Langholm. Top per kilo of 170p and 166p also for Blue Greys shown by Arkleton.

A smaller show of 3,761 prime lambs were forward to the usual competitive ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold well with export weights and light weight lambs being in serious demand.

Commercial heavies proved harder to place as more demand is expected to arise in the new year for this category of sheep. Over weight lambs sold to recent high rates of return.

Beltex lambs topped the price per kilo at 445p from DS & RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Perth, who’s quality consignment of Beltex went on to average 42kg, 354p and £148.

Rams sold to £200 for Charollais from Viewley.
