Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,497 sheep comprising of 4,316 prime hoggs and 3,181 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th March 2022.

A great offering of cast cows were forward to a keen ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade throughout, with many more numbers required on a weekly basis to satisfy the demand. Vendors should take advantage of the competitive trade here at Longtown. A great new centre record of 227p was achieved for a marvelous Limousin cow shown by Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston, who sold others at 212p and 200p. Limousin cows from the same good home also topped the price per head at £1,539 and £1,505.

A smaller show of 4,316 prime hoggs were forward, being slightly sharper on the week with an increased entry of hill bred hoggs with quality export types in short supply.   

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 422p from EJC Dean, Kirk House, Brampton.  

Top price per head was for two Texel hoggs shown by JG Wall & Son, Westernhopeburn, Bishop Auckland, which were kindly donated to raise funds for The Disaster Emergencies Committee Fund for Ukraine, these hoggs went on to sell for £200 per head to J Gittins of Ystum Colwyn Farms Ltd.

Overall Champion Pen of Cheviot Hoggs

Incorporated in this week’s prime hogg sale was the Annual Prize Show and Sale of Cheviot prime hoggs. A fantastic entry of 21 pens were present in big form, which were a credit to all vendors involved. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr Darren Gardiner of RF Staveley Ltd, Bury St Edmonds.

After much deliberation the judge duly awarded the Championship to a Longtown regular,

A Reid & Co., Glendearg, Eskdalemuir.

An overall sale average of 252.1ppk (SQQ 265.2ppk) was achieved.

Heavy ewes proved very good to sell with 21 ewes selling at £240+ and 91 at £200 or over. Topping at £278 for Texels from AJ & LJ Haston, Dearham Hall, Dearham, whose fantastic run of Texel ewes averaged a staggering £248. Also hitting the heights was another outstanding run of 21 Texel ewes consigned by W Barr & Co., Thirlestane, Lauder topping at £262 and averaging a marvelous £242.

Suffolk ewes sold at £248 from H Martindale, The Land, Ecclefechan.

Mule ewes to £152 from R Wallace & Co., Mains of Collin, Kirkcudbright.  

Hill ewes topped at £125 for Cheviots from Woodfoot Farm, Whinneyknowe, Hightae with a pen of

13 Blackface ewes selling at £119 from AW Ainslie, Linkshead, Berwick.

Rams again sold to a serious trade topping at £230 for Bluefaced Leicesters from Linkshead, Berwick.

A Texel ewe was kindly donated by Mr T Holmes, Nutholm, Lockerbie selling to raise funds for The Disaster Emergencies Committee Fund for the children and the future of Ukraine. The ewe went onto sell for £500 purchased by Shan, selling again then at £600 to N Kinsey, followed by selling at £500 a time to J Tucker, D Holmes, D McDonnell, C&D Auction Marts Ltd, Lancashire Direct & J Stevenson Bendles Solicitors LLP totaling over £4,500 for the cause.

All quantities of ewes are required for this week’s sale as the ewe trade is set to hold at this week’s extreme rates of return as numbers begin to tighten.
