Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,315 sheep comprising of 4,568 prime hoggs and 2,747 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th April 2022.

A larger and improved entry of cattle were forward where all classes remain in demand and are wanted, with more numbers required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand.  The sale topped at £1,211 for a Beef Shorthorn from AN & HS Tomkins, Hallsford, Hethersgill with Angus cows selling to £1,148 from TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm and Limousins to £1,058 from E & D Barker, Palmer Hill, Brampton. Top per kilo of 189p from Palmer Hill.

A small but better show of spring lambs were forward to an increased ring of purchasers topping at £140 and 350ppk for a pen of well bred Texel cross lambs consigned by M/s F Dalgleish, Douglas Hall, Lockerbie.   

A larger but more mixed show of 4,547 prime hoggs were forward, all well finished hoggs sold to improved rates whilst under finished hoggs sold to reduced rates and finishers are urged to draw hoggs with plenty meat as the two-tier trade continues.

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 408p from The Late Mr G McClelland, Broadlea Cottage, Ecclefechan who also went on to top the price per head at £200 also for Beltex hoggs.

Lightweight hoggs continue to be in big demand and more are wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy customer demand.  

An overall sale average of 271.8ppk (SQQ 281.3ppk) was achieved.

A larger show of 2,747 ewes were forward selling to a full ringside of purchasers achieving an overall sale average of £132.34

Heavy ewes sold to £300 for Texel ewes from Hindmarsh Partners, Blakehopeburnhaugh, Otterburn, with this consignment of Texel ewes averaging £261.33.

Mule ewes sold to a top of £171 from S Wallace, Cairnfield, Newton Stewart.   

Hill ewes topped at £134 for Cheviots from J Common & Son, Crossdykes, Corrie with Blackface ewes selling at £122 from AW Ainslie, Linkshead, Berwick.   

Rams again in very big demand topping at £250 for Texels from W Milven & Son, Kirkland of Longcastle, Wigtown.
