Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 5,130 sheep comprising of 2,052 prime hoggs, 367 spring lambs and 2,707 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th May 2022.

25 OTMs comprised of mainly grazing sorts and met plenty of demand. Longhorn x cows to 186p/kg from Alex A Roskell, Laverhay. Simmental x cows to £1358.80 from JA & E Dinwoodie, Archerbeck.

A larger show of 367 prime lambs were forward and sold to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to a big trade. Many more lambs can be sold to vendor advantage and producers are urged to draw lambs that are finished properly from 36kg upwards. The sale topped at 400p for Texels from C Saunders, Barr Hill, Newton Stewart, with top per head of £200 for Suffolks shown by C Armstrong, Studholme Bungalow, Wigton.

Achieving a very satisfactory sale average of 341.7p (SQQ 345.4p).

A smaller show of 2,052 prime hoggs were forward, a very notable two-tier trade with big hoggs and well finished hoggs receiving a premium being the dearest trade of the season, plenty of heavy hoggs realising £170 - £185. Also, a lot of well finished hoggs realising 3.20p -3.40p. Lean hoggs again proved very difficult to sell.  

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kilo at 356p from High House.

Heavy hoggs were short of purchaser’s requirements and are keenly sought after for next week sale.

Better bred and well finished lambs are actively sought after on a weekly basis as the customers are starting the move onto spring lambs, if supply can be guaranteed. Please don’t hesitate to contact our auctioneers for all enquiries.

A smaller show of 2,707 cast ewes and rams were forward, all classes easily maintain last week’s mighty rates of return as numbers still proved well short of customer demand.

Heavy ewes sold to £270 for Texel ewes from Smallburn Farms, and £250 consigned by G Cakebread, Commonside, Hawick.

Mule ewes sold to a top of £151 from BPF Norwood, Fell End, Brampton.

Hill ewes topped at £149 for Cheviots from T Magnay, Galleywreay, Penrith. Blackface ewes peaked at £126 consigned by M/s Anderson, Rowanburnfoot, Whilst Swaledale ewes topped at a mighty £116 for a penful consigned by M/s Kyle, Spoutbank

Rams topping at £248 for Texels from JW Hogg, Longyester, East Lothian.
