Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,236 sheep comprising of 3,337 prime lambs and 4,899 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st September 2022.

Fewer cows on offer, yet all classes continue to sell at recent high rates, with more numbers actively required on a weekly basis here at Longtown. The sale topped at £1,131 for a Holstein Friesian from M Scott, Milton Hill, Brampton with Charolais to £1,078 from FR Crew, Gall Farm, Lockerbie. Top per kilo of 174p from Gall.

A similar show of 3,337 prime lambs were forward with a far better show of well finished lambs on offer, selling to unexpected trade being firmer on the week. Under finished lambs still met some resistance. Again, more well finished lambs are required to satisfy demand here at Longtown.

Top price per kilo of 323p for Beltex lambs from J Halliday & Son, Linnhead, Tundergarth.

Top per head of £188 for Texels shown by AM & L Sutherland, Carran, Thurso.

A larger entry of 4,899 cast ewes and rams was forward to a full ringside of purchasers ensuring all classes were well bid for. Heavy ewes and best Texel ewes sold to a big trade being £5-£8 up on the week being in short supply. Lean ewes of all breeds were well bid for as an abundance of feeding jobs ensured all bases were covered. More ewes are wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.

Heavy ewes sold to £258 per head for Texel ewes shown by GJ Toppin, Bascodyke Foot, Ainstable, who’s run of 22 ewes went on to average a remarkable £227.  

Hill ewes topped at £138 for Hill Cheviots from J Robertson & Son, Becks, Langholm.  

Rams sold to £205 for Bluefaced Leicesters from PE Staley, Broadmea, Slaggyford.
