Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,690 sheep comprising of 3,699 prime lambs and 4,991 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th October 2022.

A smaller and plainer show of cast cows was forward with many being non-farm assured. The sale topped at £1,468 for Angus from WN Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow with Limousins to £1,281 from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston, who sold others at £1,200. Simmental cows to £1,209 from H Graham, Holme House, Walton. Top per kilo of 178p from Wanwood Hill and 168p from Holme House.  

A smaller show of 3,699 prime lambs was forward to a full ring of purchasers. Best export lambs were in short supply and very well bid for whilst commercial exports met some resistance. Heavies would be a firmer trade than the middle of the week albeit easier than last week’s rates. Well fed lambs were still wanted and will be for next week’s prime sale. 

Top price per kilo of 307p for Beltex lambs from AD Batey, Heathery Knowe, Longtown.

Texel lambs sold to a top of £158 consigned by SA Lawson, Huntly Lodge, Aberdeen.

A smaller entry of 4,991 cast ewes and rams was forward. Heavy horned and North Country Cheviot ewes proved good to sell whilst lightweight ewes both meated and lean again proved difficult to place. 

Heavy ewes topped at £302 from Marygate Ltd, Berwick. 

Hill ewes topped at £96 for Cheviots from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm.   

Rams sold to £215 for Texels from AJ & LJ Haston, Dearham Hall, Maryport.
