Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,078 sheep comprising of 4,004 prime lambs and 5,074 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 3rd November 2022.

A larger show of cast cows was on offer to a ringside of five active buyers, ensuring a competitive trade for all classes considering there was a large percentage of non-farm assured and hill cows forward. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to meet buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,567 for an Angus shown by J Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland with Limousins to £1,332 from Meikle Whitriggs, Corrie. Beef Shorthorns to £1,278 from JDM Thomson, Newlands, Eagliesfield with other Limousins to £1,200 from H Graham Holme House, Walton, who also sold Simmentals at £1,062. Galloway cows topped at £1,024 from Clerk Hill, Eskdalemuir and to £1,005 from J Jackson & Son, Cumstone, Corrie. Top per kilo of 160p for Galloways from Clerkhill and 150p from Cumstone with Blue Greys also to 160p from A Maxwell, Craighousesteads, Tundergarth. Beef Shorthorn and Simmental cows to 154p from Newlands and Holme House, with Limousins to 150p also from H Graham.

A similar show of 4,004 prime lambs were forward to a full ring of purchasers ensuring all classes were markedly dearer on the week. A better show of well fed continental commercial lambs were forward which regularly traded at 260p-270p with the best end of export lambs 310p-320p

Top price per kilo of 334p for Beltex lambs consigned by MA & J Thompson, High Hall, Wigton, who’s tidy run of Beltex lambs averaged 296ppk and £135.

Heavy lambs were an unexpected trade being a lump firmer on the week being short of purchaser requirements. Texel lambs topped the heavy section selling to a top of £154 also from High Hall.

More well finished Lambs are required to fulfil increased purchaser demand and are required on a weekly basis.

Another large entry of 5,074 cast ewes and rams were forward to the same ring of purchasers ensuring all classes met their true potential being a long way in front of all other centers. New and old vendors alike who travelled from all corners of the British Isles to sell their cast ewes and rams at Longtown Auction left highly delighted with their days trading, as no fewer than 114 lots (312 head) of ewes sold to £210 and over, cementing Longtown’s position and reputation as the leading firm in the UK for the marketing of cast sheep.     

Heavy ewes topped at an eye watering center record of £335 for pure bred Texel ewes consigned from Marygate Ltd, Berwick for the second week in succession.  

Suffolk ewes topped at £180 for pure bred ewes consigned by M/s Austin, Woodcroft, Dumfries.

Mule ewes saw the biggest rise in price topping at £124 for a pen of English Mules consigned by Messrs P Ambler, High Mossthorn, Roadhead. Heavy mule ewes regularly traded between £108-£118

Hill ewes topped at £116 for a penful of Blackface ewes from PD Cumming, Barnsallie, Glenluce.

Rams sold to £192 for Beltex from J Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso.
