Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,715 sheep comprising of 4,007 prime lambs, 4,708 cast ewes & rams and 42 cattle at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st December 2022.

A marvelous entry of 42 cattle were forward for the Christmas Show & Sale, which was kindly sponsored by Murray Farmcare and the judging was in the capable hands of Mr G Moor, Hawick. A mixed offering was forward although a busy ringside of five active buyers ensured all classes were keenly bid for and quality was in demand. The sale topped at 222p for a Galloway bullock shown by A Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill, Bewcastle, who also sold a Limousin cow at 219p. Other Limousins sold to a top of 203p from PJ & L Dixon, Upperburnmouth, Newcastleton and to 196p from N McBurney, Balsalloch, Girvan & TN & F Cow, The Ash, Roadhead. Top price per head of £1,726 achieved for an Angus also shown by Messrs McBurney, with Limousins to £1,644 from Upperburnmouth and Salers topping at £1,530 from Moorfields.

A smaller show of 4,007 prime lambs sold to the same ring of 15 active competitive purchasers operating on 89 accounts, ensuring all classes where well bid for firmer on the week. Heavies again proved very good to sell with many pens of commercial heavies realising £138 plus. Light weight lambs sold to an increased enquiry being in demand. More lambs are wanted on a weekly basis to satisfy demand, please do not hesitate to contact our auctioneers for all enquiries.  
Top price per kilo of 404p for Beltex lambs from JA Park & Co., Drinkstone, Hawick, which also topped the price per head at £178. Texel lambs also sold to £178 from I Donaldson, Ashton, Lockerbie.

Another similar show of 4,708 cast ewes and rams forward. Heavy ewes and best bred Texel/Beltex ewes met an eye watering trade once again, with many more required to fulfill an extreme demand here at Longtown. 

Lightweight ewes met slight resistance on last weeks astronomical rates of return. 

Texel ewes sold to a top of £300 on two separate occasions, consigned by M/s T Renwick & Sons, Craig Douglas, Yarrow and from Viewley Farm.

A very smart run of Texel ewes graced the ring this week consigned by G J Toppin, Bascodyke, Ainstable topped at £260, and averaged an eye watering £241.  

A tidy run of Texel and Suffolk ewes consigned by Wellingley Grange averaged a staggering £224. 
Cheviot ewes sold to a top of £107 from RA & JS Robertson, Yetholm Mains, Kelso & Playfair Farms, Morebattle Tofts, Kelso. Blackface ewes to £102 from JL & HR Gledson, Buteland, Bellingham. 

Rams topped at £188 for Texels from Chaseside.
