Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,983 sheep comprising of 4,596 prime hoggs and 4,387 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th January 2023.
A small mixed entry of cattle were forward to the usual competitive ringside of buyers. Yet again all classes remain very much in demand with more numbers required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at £1,533 for an Angus from W Skilling, Cara View, Campbeltown. Limousin cows sold to 160p from D F Crew, Gall Farm, Lockerbie.
A very mixed show of 4,596 prime hoggs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers. Lean lambs are urged to be marketed in the store market here on a Tuesday to realise their true potential. Better bred hoggs that were well finished proved good to sell whilst heavy hoggs harder work on the week

A much larger show of 4,387 cast ewes and rams forward. Heavy ewes and best Texel/Beltex ewes in demand whilst leaner ewes proved harder to cash.
Texel ewes topped at £300 for a pen of 3 very well bred Texel ewes from Messrs Duncan, West Croft, Aberdeen, who’s run of 73 pure bred Texel ewes averaged £221 and his run of heavy 146 Continental bred and Cheviot Mule ewes averaged £179.
Hill ewes to £100 for Cheviots from Bridgewater & Wood, Potholm, Langholm.
Rams sold to £245 for Texels from A & T Wilson, Baryerrock, Whauphill.
