Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 11,154 sheep comprising of 6,098 prime hoggs and 5,056 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd March 2023.

A larger show of cast cows forward. Although a mixed offering, all classes continue to meet a huge demand therefore proving to be as competitive here at Longtown as anywhere else. More numbers are sought after on a weekly basis to satisfy buyers requirements. The sale topped at 241p for a British Blue from RJ Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown with others to 228p for a Charolais shown by Messrs Baxter, Moss Side, Hethersgill. Herefords topped at 228p from J Johnstone, North Howes, Annan with Beef Shorthorns to 214p from Waterhead of Dryfe, Shaw of Dryfe, Lockerbie.

Top per head of £1,755 for Charolais from Moss Side, who sold others at £1,289 and £1,249. British Blues sold to £1,530 from Killocraw with Friesians topping at £1,284 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton.

A much larger entry of 6,098 prime hoggs were forward which included 3,154 Blackface, Cheviot and Swaledale hoggs, which sold to an increased ring of purchasers. Commercial heavy hoggs met some resistance whilst lightweight hoggs and export types proved very good to sell with customers going home delighted with their days trading.     

Top price per head of £144 for Texel hoggs shown by Muircleugh Partners, Muircleugh, Lauder.

Top per kilo of 340p for Beltex hoggs from G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck.

Incorporated in the weekly sale pf prime hoggs was the prize show and sale of Blackface Hoggs kindly sponsored by The Scottish Farmer. A very substantial entry of 1,907 blackies were forward which included 16 pens of 20 show hoggs.

Judging was left in the very capable hands of Mr S Stoddart, Hillside who after some deliberation awarded the championship to the first prize heavy hoggs consigned by returning customer M/s Taylor, Heathery Hall, Lanarkshire, these hoggs went onto realise £115 being purchased by regular purchasers Farmers Fresh.

The directors, auctioneers and all the auction mart staff would like to thank all parties involved with todays show and sale.

A similar show of 5,056 cast ewes and rams forward, all classes maintained and in some cases surpassed last weeks high rates of return, topping at an outstanding £302 for a superstar of a Texel ewe consigned by Muircleugh Partners, Muircleugh, Lauder.

Hill ewes to £114 for Cheviots from EM Smith & Sons, Towiemore, Keith and from G & L White, Howden, Selkirk.

Rams sold to £220 for Bluefaced Leicesters from W & PF Walton, Penpeugh, Bardon Mill.

Cast ewes and prime hoggs were consigned to Longtown from all corners of the British Isles, from Northern Ireland, Devon, Okehampton and Cheshire, to the Yorkshire Dales, the northern counties, Argyll, Aberdeenshire, Thurso and Caithness all to take full advantage of the most competitive ring of buyers in the country.
