Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,057 sheep comprising of 6,490 prime hoggs and 2,567 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th March 2023.
A mixed offering of hill and dairy cows were forward although all classes remain in demand. More numbers are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer requirements. The sale peaked at 242p for Blue Greys from WD & R Elliot, Burnfoot of Ewes, Langholm, who also sold Galloways at 219p and 203p. Top price per head of £1,942 for an Angus shown by Messrs A Taylor, High Crubasdale, Tarbert, with Blue Greys to £1,560 and Galloways at £1,346 from Burnfoot.

Another huge but very mixed show of 6,490 prime hoggs forward, all categories of well finished hoggs were in big demand being dearer across the board on last week’s high rates of return. Lean store hoggs are better marketed through the store. An increased ring of purchasers ensured the trade was hot from start to finish with more numbers required to fulfil an ever increasing purchaser demand here at Longtown.
Top price per head of £222 for a huge Texel Tup hogg shown by JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Tundergarth.
Top per kilo of 418p for a pen of fantastic Beltex hoggs consigned by Messrs McKie, Finnieness, Balmaghie.
An outstanding show of Blackface hoggs were easily sold, a run of 156 Blackface hoggs consigned from Upper Wellwood Farm, Muirkirk topped at 51kg £138.50.
Whilst an equally good run of 226 Blackie hoggs consigned by M/s Blackwood, Greenside, Cronberry, who’s well-bred and expertly fed hoggs averaged 43kg and £126.80p, breaking over 300ppk topping at 308ppk.

A smaller show of 2,567 cast ewes and rams forward. Sold to very similar rates on the week. Lean meated continental ewes and well finished handy weight ewes in big demand whilst heavy over fat ewes met some resistance, although they will have their day soon enough.
Texel ewes topped at £268 from W & C Ingram, Loanhead, Inverurie.
Hill ewes to £110 for Blackfaces from Barrack Services, Nether Overhill, Aberdeen.
Rams sold to £245 for Suffolks from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.
Cast ewes and prime hoggs were again consigned to Longtown from all corners of the British Isles, from Northern Ireland, Cheshire, the northern counties, Argyll, Aberdeenshire, Thurso and Caithness all to take full advantage of the most competitive ring of buyers in the country.
