Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,443 sheep comprising of 1,089 spring lambs and 2,354 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th June 2023.

Cast cows maintaining recent rates with more numbers required to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,104 for Shorthorn cows from Meikle Whitriggs, Lockerbie with Angus cows selling to 180o from M Baxter, Kiln Hill, Gilsland.

A smaller show of 1,089 spring lambs forward. All classes of lambs were competitively bid for selling to the same ring of purchasers. Trade proved to be a long way back on the week but dearer than other centres Tuesday/Wednesday.

The first of the hill lambs descended on Longtown today selling well as many more lightweight lambs are required to fulfill demand.

More lambs of all classes are required and actively sought after for the coming weeks as demand sets to increase.

The sale topped at 320p for Beltex hoggs shown by J & E Walby & Sons, East House, Newcastle and from TC Jackson, Langdyke Cottage, Ecclefechan, with Texel lambs also selling to 320p from GR Scott & Son, Corneyside, Matfen.
