Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,500 sheep comprising of 3,987 prime lambs and 5,513 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th September 2023.
A larger offering of cast cows forward and although the majority were non farm assured, a brisk trade was met throughout. The sale topped at £1,311 for a Simmental from TL Hogg & Son, Ryehills, Canonbie with South Devon cows topping at £1,188 and £1,179 from J Thomson & Partners, Howcleuch, Hawick. Galloways sold to £1,027 from the Firm of J Tullie, Fenwick, Hawick, which also topped the price per kilo at 214p.
A similar show of 3,987 prime lambs forward. A very mixed show of lambs forward, with quality and well fleshed lambs in short supply and proved to be in demand.
The sale peaked at 330p for Beltex lambs shown by M & M Byrne, Thornthwaite Close, Wigton.
Top per head of £260 for Texels from AM & L Sutherland, Carran, Thurso.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another large show 5,513 cast ewes and rams were forward. All classes of ewes sold to similar rates with heavy and best ewes in short supply. Leaner ewes sold to a slightly firmer trade on the week with feeding orders a plenty.
Texel ewes topped the sale at £290 from Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns.
Hill ewes topped at £106 for Cheviots from WW Dunlop & Son, Comonside, Hawick.
Rams sold to £230 for Texels from G Gray, Sunnycroft, Selkirk.
