Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,713 sheep comprising of 5,005 prime lambs and 3,708 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th December 2023.

A pleasing entry of 35 cast cows, bulls & OTM’s were forward for the Christmas Show & Sale which was kindly sponsored by Murray Farmcare and the judging in the capable hands of Mr Jack Iveson. An improved show of cattle were keenly sought after to a ringside of nine bidders, ensuring a buoyant trade was met throughout. The sale topped at £1,755 and £1,719 for Simmentals from Dempster Barguillean Partnership, Robmar, Argyll which also topped the price per kilo of 273p. Limousins sold to £1,565 from Messrs Baxter, Moss Side, Longtown for todays Champion cow.

A larger show of 5,005 lambs was forward to an increased ring of purchasers, ensuring all classes were in big demand seeing an increase of 8-10ppk across the board.

Incorporated in today’s sale was the annual Christmas Prize Show and Sale of prime lambs which was very ably judged by Mr Jack Iveson Esq, who had a tough job on his hands with 57 pens of sheep forward for show. After wading through the classes, Jack awarded the Supreme Overall Championship to the 1st prize Beltex lambs consigned by M/s M Batty & Z Hall, Pirntaton, Galashields whose very well presented lambs proved to be worthy champions topping the sale at £250 or 5.10ppk purchased by regular supporters West Scottish Lamb Ltd, Carlisle. The master judge then duly awarded the Reserve Championship to the 1st prize continental lambs consigned by M/s Moralee, Hardriding, Bardon Mill, which went under the hammer to make £220 or 4.40ppk selling again to West Scottish Lamb Ltd.    

A fantastic run of expertly finished first cross Texel lambs consigned by David Moir, Cairness Farm Ltd, Aberdeen descended on Longtown topping at £155 for a pen of 48 well finished lambs weighing in at 55kg achieving a massive overall average of £143 for 402 sold.

Smallburn Farms Ltd, Elgin made a very successful trip down to Longtown with a super run of 140 topping at £134 for a penful of 45kg Texel cross lambs.

Blackface lambs also proved very good to sell with a superb run of 193 full meated Blackie lambs consigned by M/s Graham, Craigdarroch Farm, Dumfries topping at £124.     

Prime lambs continue to be keenly sought after in the run up to Christmas and can be sold to vendor advantage at Longtown. Numbers are required for next week’s sale.

Another fine show of 3,708 ewes was forward, which were consigned from all four corners of the UK. All classes of continental ewes met an improved trade with Mules, Blackies and Cheviot ewes maintaining last week’s rates of return, being a long way in front of other outlets. Incorporated into Longtown’s weekly sale of ewes was the first Annual Prize Show and Sale of ewes which was expertly judged by flock master Mr James Gittins Esq, Ystum Colwyn Farms, Powys who ably awarded his prizes given below.
