Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an unrivalled entry of 12,014 sheep gracing the sheep ring at Longtown, comprising of 7,006 prime lambs and 5,008 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 14th December 2023.

A smaller, mixed show of cast cows were forward and continued to meet a competitive trade. The sale topped at 213p for a Stabiliser shown by J Laurie, Carterton, Lockerbie, which also topped per head at £1,395. Galloways sold to 160p from Eskdalemuir Forestry, Clerkhill, Eskdalemuir. Further entries are sought after for the weekly sale here at Longtown.

A much larger and very mixed show of 7,006 lambs were forward to the same ringside of purchasers, numbers handled with ease with quality in short supply. A bumper show of nearly 3,000 hill lambs (Blackie, Swale and Cheviot) and just over 900 Mule lambs graced the Longtown ring proving good to sell albeit slightly easier on the week. Best bred and well finished sheep still in demand.    

The sale topped at 336p for Beltex lambs from Newbigging Farms.

Heavy lambs were the trade of the day seeing countless pens of heavy lambs £150 +

Texel lambs sold to £208 for Texels from Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns.

Prime lambs continue to be keenly sought after in the run up to Christmas and can be sold to vendor advantage at Longtown. Best bred lambs 39kg plus, commercial lambs 44kg plus and heavies 52kg plus are required for next week’s sale.

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A larger show of 5,008 ewes were forward again sold to the same ring of competitive purchasers ensuring all classes maintained; and in some cases, surpassed last week’s high rates of return.

Best Texel and Beltex ewes in big demand and way short of purchaser requirements, returns topping at £300 for a mountain of a Texel ewe consigned by M/s W & C Ingram, Loanhead, Logie Dunro.

Hill ewes topped at £117 for Cheviots from E Findlay, Daill, Isle of Islay, being in good demand from start to finish. Blackface ewes maintained last weeks good rates of returns. Strong Blackie ewes were in short supply with the heaviest breaking over £80 topping at £91 for a pen of serious ewes consigned by M/s Mcvay, Green Hill. Many more stronger Blackie ewes can be sold to advantage.

Rams selling to a top of £220 for Texels from Marygate Farms, Berwick.
