Longtown Store Cattle Sale Report

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart plc had forward a catalogue entry of 633 suckled calves at their Annual Show and Sale on Saturday 4th October 2014.

An outstanding show of cattle were presented to a packed ringside of buyers from all parts of the UK with several purchasers attending Longtown Mart for the first time, this resulted in a flying trade with all vendors being rewarded for their hard work and stockmanship.  Every credit must be given to the farmers of Longtown and surrounding areas for presenting such a fantastic show of cattle.

The overall sale average was £1,037, with many vendors seeing an increase on the year.

The sale was sponsored by Capontree Vets & Carrs Billington, and judged by Douglas Bailes, Hartlepool, who awarded the championship to a Limousin heifer from W.H. & D.A. Gass, Nunscleugh, which later realised £1,280 and was purchased by the judge.  The reserve champion went to a Limousin heifer from D.H. & J.M. Murray, The Throp, which the judge purchased for £1,200.  The cup for the best Charolais went to a heifer from W.G. & H.M. Kyle, Spoutbank and was sold for £1,320 to Waterloo Farms, Middleton Tyas.
