Longtown Sale of Spring Born Suckler Calves
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart held their annual sale of Spring born suckler calves at Longtown on Saturday 25th October 2014.
There was a catalogue entry of 342 head and trade did not disappoint with a packed ringside of keen bidders ensuring prices surpassed last year’s high rates, with the sale average up £71.82 on the year.
The show was kindly sponsored by Dodd & Co., Accountants with the judging ably carried out by Mr. Richard Walton, Darlington, who awarded the Jacob Thomlinson Challenge Trophy to a Limousin heifer shown by D.H. & J.M. Murray, The Throp which later realised £1,070, purchased by Thomas C. Whiteford, Tercrosset and the reserve champion went to a Charolais bullock from Greystoke Castle Farms which sold at £1,070, and was bought by I.G.C. Morris, Upper Duddlewick. The cup was presented by Miss Hazel Thomlinson.

One of the highlights of the sale was the excellent run of 102 Charolais & Limousin calves from Greystoke Castle Farms, with bullocks selling to £1,070 and averaging £923.33 and heifers to £930 (x2) and averaged £872.90.
