Longtown Store & Breeding Cattle Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts held their May sale of Store & Breeding cattle on Tuesday 6th May 2025.

Store Cattle

Another fantastic show of store cattle went under the hammer today at Longtown with recent high rates of return easily maintained, surpassing vendors expectations.

One of the highlights of the sale was an entry of 35 9-12 month old Limousin and British blue sired bulls and heifers consigned by M/s Reed & Hill, Lingey Field, Stocksfield who made the trip west to top at £2,960 for a pair of forward British blue bulls with another pair of extreme black bulls not far behind at £2,940, achieving an overall average of £2,318 making the trip west very lucrative.

M/s Hope, Mouldyhills, sold a very well bred run of 14 Limousin bred 9-11m cattle which topped at £2,300 for a shapely heifer going on for further breeding. This run of very well turned out cattle averaged out at £2,072 .

Steers topped at £2,640 for a Limousin bullock consigned by M/s Blair, Dodgsonstown, Roadhead.

Heifers Topped at £2,590 M/s Tattersall, Eizieholm, Langholm  whose super run of forward heifers averaged £2,404

Breeding Cattle

Included in todays sale was the full dispersal of the beef production herd of cows consigned by M/s Hope, Mouldyhills, Canonbie. These cows were presented before a full ringside of potential purchasers that flocked to Longtown from all four corners of the British Isles to try and secure some of the very well bred stock on offer, this was testament to M/s Hopes years of dedication to their herd which were presented in perfect working condition.

First to the fore were the outfits of cows with calves at foot which topped at £4,500 on two separate occasions, firstly for a red roaned British Blue cow with a bonny heifer calf at foot and secondly for an upstanding Simmental cross cow with a forward calf.

Next through the ring was the bulk of the offering being the in calf cows, which were presented in fine form to an absolutely packed ringside of high end purchasers. Topping this section was 2 long clean Limousin cows both realising £4,000 on separate occasions both travelling east to find their new homes.

The 8 year old Limousin stock bull was well sold realising £5,400 heading north of the border being put straight to work.

Please Note:- the entire sheep stock from M/s Hope, Mouldyhills including 300 very well bred regular aged, Northumberland type Blackface ewes with top draw Mule lambs at foot, 100 dry Blackface hoggs & 50 Mule and Continental ewes with Beltex x and Texel x lambs at foot will be sold throughout the month of May.
