Longtown Breeding Cattle Sale Report
The June sale of Beef Breeding Cattle at Longtown on Tuesday 17th June 2025 saw a strong entry and even stronger demand for all classes forward.
The sale opened with the sale of Pedigree Beef Shorthorns with the support of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society. This was topped at 4,000gns for the only bull forward, Shawhill Tetrarch from Thomson, Roddick & Laurie. This 20 month old son of Shawhill Radar went to T.A. & J. Swinbank for their Darlington based Limelane herd.
Shorthorn cows with calves at foot saw 3,600gns paid by G.W. Dent, Kaberfold to Franzeal Farming, Lauriston for Coxhill Blythesome by Fearn Duke, a 2016 born cow with bull calf at foot. At 3,400gns, Jack Oliver sold an Offthewall Victoria heifer with bull calf to Messrs Copeland, Nether Collinhurst; Jack Oliver sold another at 3,000gns and cows and heifers with calves at foot averaged £3,020 overall. In calf heifers made to 3,000gns for Pikestone Irania Twinkle, by Derwentwood Kinsman from C. & J. C. Stephenson, Bishop Auckland, bought by M. Hodgson, Carleton, Holmrook.
A good show of Shorthorn maiden heifers saw Batch Cowslip Troublemaker, a smart roan yearling from Abbey MacLean, Kerseknowe Cottages, Kelso make 3,000gns. By Jacobite Star of Longfield, she went to M. Hodgson. Other maiden heifers went at 2,600gns & 2,200gns, from H. & N. Sloan Burnfoot and 2,600gns & 2,400gns from Shawhill. Heifers overall averaged £2,392.
Topping the day`s sale at 5,800gns was an impressive three year-old Aberdeen Angus bull from J.F. & J.K. Hayward, Fell House, Colwelll, purchased by Mess Strawhorn, Dalmakethar, Lockerbie.
A great entry of commercial beef cows and heifers with calves made to £3,100, three times from the Borthwickshiels consignment of Galloway cross Shorthorn heifers with Shorthorn calves at foot from R. &. M. MacKintosh; others from the same home to £3,000. H.W. Sloan, Rigghead had Shorthorn heifers with calves at £3,000 (twice). Other heifers with calves to £2,900, Minsca & £2,900 Borthwickshiels, with a Highland heifer & calf at £2,000 from Dumbretton. Older cows with calves made to £3,300 for a Limousin cross from Mouldyhills and £2500 & £2,400 for Angus crosses ex Pilmuir. Luing in-calf heifers made £2,500 (twice) from Dumbretton. Bulling heifers topped at £2,200 & £1,900 from Fell House and £2,000 & £1,950 from Greensburn.
