Longtown Store Sheep Sale Report

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 1,458 head of hoggs and ewes with lambs at Longtown on Tuesday 13th May 2014.

An excellent show of sheep attracted a packed ring of buyers with all sheep meeting a fantastic trade and short of requirements.

The Annual Show of Hoggs with Lambs, mostly from regular Eden Valley supporters, were an outstanding show. Judging was in the capable hands of Harry Fisher, Beeches, Walton, Brampton, who did an expert job.

His awards were as follows:-

Mule hoggs with singles –
1st prize – Messrs Ridsdale, Yewtree, Calthwaite, Penrith, sold to the judge at £110.
2nd prize – Messrs Ridsdale, sold at £101 to the judge.
3rd prize – Messrs Fawcett, Little Blencowe, Blencowe, Penrith, sold at £88 to Messrs Walton, Darlington.

Continental hoggs with singles –
1st prize – Messrs Telford, High Parkfoot, Roadhead, sold at £99 to Messrs Mousey, Walton Highrigg.

Ewes with singles to £74 for Texels from Cowden, others £71 Derwent House; Greyface £70 Little Blencowe; Roussin £51 Castlefairn; Swaledale £38 Bailey Mill, £37.50 Chapel; Herdwick £37.50 Farthingwell.

Ewes with twins to £74 for Texels from Cowden; Greyface £60 Westmillhills, £58 Reagill Grange; Cheviot Mule £56 Whitstone Hill; Suffolk £55 Derwent House; Half Bred £55 Derwent House; Roussin £51, £50 Castlefairn; Welsh Mule £50 Cannerheugh; Swaledale £38 Bailey Mill, £35 Farthingwell.

Store hoggs to £50 Eycott, cast ewes to £54.50 Cowrigg.
