Longtown Sheep Sale Report

STORE SHEEP

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 7,739 store lambs (inc. 2,756 Cheviots and 1,810 Blackfaces) at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 30th September, 2014.

A large entry of store lambs attracted several extra distant buyers with trade very easily maintained. Top of £71, twice, for Beltex’s from Whitstonehill and Byers Farm. Dutch Texel £67, £65 Greenside; Suffolk £62.50 Clarghyll; Texel £62, £61 Romanway; Greyface £62, £56 Cowden, £54.50 Wydon Eals and Woodside; Lleyn £58.50 Harper Hill, £55.50 Beachmennoch, £55 Sharplaw; Masham £54.50 Parcelstown; Charollais £57 Parcelstown; Swaledale £34 Underbank, £33.50 Oustan.

Cheviots were a large entry, best still very dear. Smaller lambs easier although plenty of customers present. Top £59 for Hill Northies from Alnham, Castlehill and Gillesbie Farms, others £58 Sorbietrees and Unthank. Hill Cheviots to £58 Arkleton, £57.50 Cooms, £57 Toftholm.

Blackfaces were a good trade with the strongest easiest sold. Top £52.50 Townshields, £48 Sundhope, £47 Stell Green.

Cast ewes to £44.50 Newton, cast rams £48 Parkhouse.

BREEDING SHEEP

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. had forward 2,133 head at the sale of lowland breeding sheep, including the second sale of 660 Mule Ewe Lambs at Longtown on Tuesday 30th September 2014.

All classes were easily sold and an excellent show of ¾ and pure Texel ewe lambs were forward to a ring of keen buyers. Quality always sells.

The sale was topped at £180 for a pen of ¾ Texel shearlings from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick. Ewe lambs sold to £138 for ¾ Texels from the same home, with Mule ewe lambs peaking at £98 from Temple House. More sheep could have been sold to advantage.
