Longtown Sheep Sale Report

STORE LAMBS

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 9,095 store lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 14th October, 2014.

A larger entry of lambs were forward with more buyers present including several from a distance. Long keep sorts saw the dearest trade this year with top lambs similar on the week.

Cheviots (2,777) were once again a wonderful show, all classes dearer on the week. Top £63 for Hill Northies from Priesthaugh, others £58 Lymiecleugh, £57.50 Sorbietrees. Hill to £60 Toftholm, £59 Windyhaugh and West Deloraine, £58.50 Carlenrigg.

Blackfaces (2,439), strong lambs in demand, smaller ones ridiculously dear. Top £55 Townshields and Horseholme, £54 Upperburnmouth, £50 Megdale.

BREEDING SHEEP

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. had forward 3,190 head at the sale of breeding sheep, comprising 1,817 Hill Ewes at their 2nd sale, and 1,273 Lowland sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 14th October 2014.

A packed ring of local and distant buyers ensured a buoyant trade from start to finish and with a quality show of stock on offer most people left satisfield. The sale was topped at £178 for Texel shearlings from D. Bell & Son, Hoddamtown and the hill section topped at £108 for North Country Cheviot 2 crop ewes from Messrs Harding, High Frost Hall.
