Longtown Pedigree In Lamb Females

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc held its Inaugural Sale of Pedigree Suffolk & Charollais in lamb females and geld ewe lambs at Longtown on Tuesday 11th November 2014.

A catalogued entry of 38 sheep met a lot of interest and a full ring of buyers ensured a good selling trade with vendors going home satisfied. More in lamb females could have been sold to advantage.

The sale was topped at £800 for a 1 crop Suffolk ewe from Messrs Douglas, Catslackburn. She was by the £2,800 Scrogtonhead sire and sold in lamb carrying twins to the Conchar sire purchased for £1,300 at Stirling 2013. She was purchased by Messrs Kayes, Broompark. Closely followed at £750 was Mr Douglas’ second ewe, also a 1 crop and with exact same particulars, she sold to Messrs Taylor, Morpeth

The highlight of the sale was a consignment of 12 stock gimmers from the Landale flock, property of Messrs Martindale, which realised a top of £520 (x2) both selling to Mrs E. Wilkie, Shaw Cottage, Lockerbie. Both were by Landale Black Magic and sold carrying twins to the 4,000gns Shrewsbury reserve champion – Carony McIlroy.

Ewe lambs sold to £300 from Messrs Harkness, Netherhall.

In the Charollais section, there was a shortage of supply for the demand created. The sale was topped at £420 for a gimmer from Messrs Kennedy, Wester Parkgate. She sold carrying a single to Carnew Nijinsky and was purchased by Messrs Towers, Felton.

Also sold were a consignment of Bluefaced Leicester shearing rams from Messrs Browell, Quarry House which sold to £350.

Suffolk ewe lambs – £300 Netherhall, £200 (x2) Prettsmill.

Charollais in lamb shearlings – £420, £400 (x2), £380, £350 Wester Parkgate.
