Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,556 store lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 29th September, 2015.

Another large entry attracted several distant buyers, trade was very similar to last week’s high rates. Top of £63 for Texels from Stonehall, £59 Underwood and Parcelstown, £58.50 High Lovelady Shield; Greyface £61 Underbank, £55 Spency Croft, £52.50 Crowhall and Butterdales; Dutch Texel £59 Greenside; Suffolk cross £58.50 High House and Glenlee Farms, £56.50 Gillalees; Cheviot Mule £52.50 Powisholm; Lleyn £53 Espland; Charollais £51 Weeds; Shetland £48 Cronklea; Swaledale £36, £33.50 Nookton, £33 Underbank; Herdwick £30 Dumfries Est.

A very large entry of Cheviots met a firmer trade for the top draws. Top £56.50 for Hill Northies from Lymiecleugh, £56 Gillesbie, £55 Alnham Castle Hill, £54.50 Hownam Grange and Lymiecleugh.  Hill Cheviot £53.50 Twislehope, £52.50 Cooms and Hopsrig, £52 Glendinning and Bombie.

Blackfaces (1,436) also met a strong demand for the top draws. Top £55 for a pen from Allensgreen, £50 Crowhall.

BREEDING SHEEP

C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,580 head at the sale of lowland breeding sheep of all classes at Longtown on Tuesday 29th September 2015.

A busy ring of buyers from all over, trade was however very steady in most classes owing to the recent slump in prime sheep prices. Men showed caution and were particular in what they bought.

The sale was topped at £240 for some pure Texel shearlings from Mr Crosbie, Townfoot who also sold to £170 and £150.

Ewes topped at £150 for Texels from C. Houldey, Kirtleton House who also sold to £140.

Ewe lambs topped a £118 for Texels from Messrs Bell, Kirkton, Hawick who also sold at £110.

Also today were two dispersals, firstly on behalf of Langside Farms, Melrose, who sold 540 Suffolk x Highlanders, selling as follows:- Shearlings £86, £88, £85; two shear £92, £91, £81; three shear £89, £84, £78. Then for 159 Roussin x Blackface from Messrs Gourlay, Castlefairn, selling at shearlings £85; one crop £70; two crop £68; three crop £64.

The second sale of Mule ewe lambs met a fast selling trade and short of requirements to a top of £97 from Craig Farming, Langholm.
