Longtown Ladies Sale Report

On Tuesday 12th January 2016, C&D Auction Marts Limited, Longtown held their second evening "Longtown Ladies" sale with a catalogue entry of 145 head (110 Texel, 18 Continental 17 Bluefaced Leicester) presented to a packed ringside of over 300 people, an encouraging sign that the auction mart still continues to be well supported and that special sales always attract attention, with character lots in strong demand.

The highlight of the evening came in the Texel gimmers where a new centre record of 2,100gns was achieved when first time consignor, Proctors Farm Limited, Slaidburn sold their number one gimmer by Tophill Union Jack carrying a single to Knap Wot a Nut to new breeders D.P. & R.A. Delves, The View, Churchstone.

The pre-sale show for both ewes and gimmers, kindly sponsored by Wm. Armstrong Ltd, Longtown and ably judged by Mr R. Laird, Cambwell, Biggar who awarded the Championship and the H.G.& I. Woodmass Trophy to a gimmer from Messrs Jamieson, Woodhead, Annan, which realised 750gns.  This gimmer was by Crosskirk Ultimate Warrior, sold carrying a single to Teiglum Wise Guy and heads north to join the flock of Mr Slater, Roadside, Orkney Isles.

Next at 1,050gns was Procters number four gimmer by Sportsman Unimog and carrying a single to Tophill Union Jack, she joins the flock of R.A. Hughes, Rhydeilian, Anglesey.  Then at 1,000gns the second Procters entry by Knock Trident sold carrying a pair to Knap Wot a Nut to Messrs Jones & Rowlanes, Tegsan, Bala.

In the ewe section the trade topped at 700gns for a 2 crop ewe from Archie Hamiltons Smyllum flock which was sired by Ettrick Tartan Special carrying a pair to Springwell Wexford.  She stood second in the show and buying back some of his breeding was G. Gray, Sunnycroft, Ettrick.  The third from the same flock sold at 500gns by Cowal Powerhouse carrying a single to Springwell Wexford, she sold to M.J. Lawson, Pasture House, Bolton Low Houses.

4th – H.G. Woodmass, Harene (lot 12) sold at 280gns to A.R. Towers, Felton.

Continental females sold to a top of 450gns for ¾ Texel ¼ Beltex from Messrs Beard, Dormansteads, selling to J.D. Anderson & Son, Barnakill, Lochgilphead, followed at 350gns, twice, firstly to G.A. Oliver, Elsdonburn and also to N.C. Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth.

Charollais sold to 350gns from Messrs Kennedy, Wester Parkgate, selling to Messrs Thomson, Newlands, Eaglesfield.

Also included was the annual sale of Bluefaced Leicester in lamb females and geld ewe hoggs.

Leading the way here was a ewe hogg from Messrs Thornborrow, Easter Dawyck, Peebles. This hogg by 642 Midlock realised 750gns and sold to Messrs Fallows, Burnton, New Cumnock.

Gimmers sold to 700gns for the number one from Messrs J. Wight & Sons, Midlock, Crawford, this sheep by 3320/B4 Tanhouse sold carrying a single to E1 Hewgill and was purchased by Messrs Linton & Azalia, Burnside, Abington.

The second Midlock gimmer by 4244/E4 Blarnavaid realised 680gns and sold carrying a pair to F27 Midlock Mustang, this gimmer heads home with Dan Walton, Wanwood Hill, Alston.

And the third Midlock gimmer by 684/F2 Swathburn realised 500gns, carrying a single to E1 Hewgill, she heads home to J.M. Livestock, Slongaber, Speddock.

Other ewe hoggs sold to 350gns (x2) Messrs Thornborrow, Easter Dawyck and shearlings sold to 300gns (x2) also from Easter Dawyck.
